Launching your first Facebook Ads campaign: the six-step checklist
To launch a Facebook Ads campaign properly, get five things ready before you publish: a clear objective, conversion tracking, a destination for your leads, a budget that lets Meta learn, and several different creatives. Then leave it alone through the learning phase.
Every step has its trap. Here they are, and how to avoid them.
Step 1: pick the right objective
Meta optimises for exactly what you ask. Choose "Traffic" and it will find people who click, not people who buy.
| Your situation | Meta objective | What Meta goes looking for |
|---|---|---|
| You sell online | Sales | Buyers |
| You sell on quotes or appointments | Leads | People who leave their details |
| You want visits to your site | Traffic | Clicks |
| You want local awareness | Awareness | The most people reached |
The trap: choosing the cheapest objective instead of the one that pays. A click costs less than a lead, and settles no invoices.
Step 2: install conversion tracking
Without tracking, Meta does not know which ads produce results. So it cannot optimise.
- The pixel tracks actions on your site from the browser.
- The Conversions API sends those actions from a server. It recovers part of what is lost to ad blockers, cookie refusals and iOS restrictions.
The trap: it is technical. Many small businesses launch without reliable tracking, and Meta optimises blind.
Step 3: decide where your leads land
| Instant form | Landing page | |
|---|---|---|
| Upside | Little effort for the lead, more volume | More information, better qualified |
| Downside | Quality sometimes lower | A page to build, has to load fast |
| Best for | Local services, quote requests | Offers that need explaining |
The trap: a lead who is not called back quickly is lost. Decide who calls, and how fast, before you launch. That is the subject of guide 4.
Step 4: set a budget that lets Meta learn
Every ad set goes through a learning phase. Meta states that it ends after roughly 50 optimisation events in 7 days.
Weekly budget ≈ estimated cost per result × 50
Example: a lead costs you €15. That is about €750 a week, or €107 a day.
The trap: most small budgets never get there. Meta then shows "Learning limited" and results stay unstable. Three ways out:
- Put the whole budget on a single ad set instead of splitting it.
- Optimise for a more frequent event, add-to-cart rather than purchase.
- Be in a collective that learns from everyone else's signals: the volume comes from the group, not from your budget.
Step 5: prepare 3 to 5 genuinely different creatives
Since the rebuild of its delivery system (Andromeda), Meta reads the content of your ads to decide who sees them. Many practitioners sum it up this way: the creative now does much of the targeting.
In practice:
- Keep targeting broad.
- Vary the angles, not just the colours. That is the subject of guide 3.
The trap: producing varied creatives takes time and ideas. That is usually where a small business stalls.
Step 6: launch, then stop touching it
A significant change (budget, creative, audience, a new ad) restarts the learning phase. Follow this calendar:
| When | What to look at | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Day 3 | Is it delivering? Impressions, clicks, rejected ads | Fix a blocker, nothing else |
| Day 7 | Cost per lead against your maximum | Nothing, unless the cost is far above threshold |
| Day 14 | Which creative performs, lead quality | Cut the weakest, test a new angle |
The checklist to copy
- ☐ My break-even ROAS or maximum cost per lead is calculated (guide 1)
- ☐ The campaign objective matches how I actually sell
- ☐ The pixel and the Conversions API are reporting events
- ☐ The form or landing page is tested
- ☐ I know who calls leads back, and how fast
- ☐ The budget gets near 50 results a week, or I learn with a collective
- ☐ I have 3 to 5 creatives with different angles
- ☐ Day 3, day 7 and day 14 are in my calendar
How Trippple simplifies the launch
- Automatic market research: your site, your competitors, customer reviews and Meta's ad library.
- Creatives ready to go: generated from that research, reviewed one by one by the team. You keep the last word.
- Tracking included: Trippple pixel, server-side sending, only after consent.
- A landing page built per campaign when needed.
- Being in a collective that learns from everyone else's signals: your budget benefits from the learning of businesses targeting the same buyers. Your ads stay in your name.
Example: Maison de l'Alliance received 50 quote requests in one month for €349 spent.

Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum budget for a Facebook Ads campaign?
There is no universal figure. Multiply your estimated cost per result by 50 to get the weekly budget that lets Meta leave its learning phase.
Broad targeting or detailed targeting?
Broad targeting is now the starting point most practitioners recommend. It is your creatives that steer delivery.
How long does the learning phase last?
Until roughly 50 events in 7 days. On a small budget it may never end, and results then stay unstable.
Instant form or landing page?
A form for volume and local services. A landing page for offers that need explaining.
The collective is joined by referral.
